Eyo Festival


The Lagosians often make a slang in Yoruba "o de eko ,o mo eyo" which means "if you haven't reach Lagos you can't know this masquerade".
   This particular masquerade have actually made them unique among other states, and also made Lagos (Lagos Island) very populated during its celebration.
   In the history of this particular masquerade it wasn't held as a festival. It was for honoring the demise of the King and a highly respected Chief. But as a result of civilization and involvement of politics it became a festival which as also being a source of tourist attraction.  
     A week before the celebration((Sunday) the senior Eyo(Adimu) goes to out which actually inform people the occasion will be held on Saturday,then the other four important Eyos [Laba(red), Oniko(yellow),Ologede(green), Agere(purple)] comes out in order from Monday to Thursday. Then 'Orisa Oniko' walk round early the day of the celebration.
   During the celebration the Eyos are seen wearing a white flowing costume which consists of 'agbada'(the top robe) and 'aropale'(the bottom robe) to ensure no part of their body shows. They also wear 'akete'(hat) which has the colour and shield of the 'Iga'(palace) where they come from, at times, the ribbon colour of the Iga is tied on their 'opambata'(palm branch).

 As it is a celebration there are some things people around the festival area are not allowed to do which includes:
  • Smoking.
  • wearing of foot wears.
  • Riding of motorcycles and bicycle.
  • Tying of scarves.
  • Wearing of costume overnight
  • Wearing of costume to cross a river or Lagoon.
