Yam lovers where are you?πŸ™‹I just have to share this so you will know you have your day on the Igbo's calendar.
This event usually happen after the rainy season in early August. It symbolizes the conclusion of an harvest and beginning of a new one.Yam is the first crop to be harvested which is very important to the people of this particular region.
On the eve of this event specifically towards the evening, all the old yam are consumed or discarded, because they believe the new year should start with tasty and newly harvested yam not the old dried one of the previous year. To surprise you, the only dish that will be served at the ceremony is YAM, just to celebrate abundance of the produce.
At the beginning of this event, some of the yams are sacrificed to the gods before it is distributed to the villagers. The sacrifice is always done by either the oldest in the village or the king. This is done to show appreciation to the god for protecting them before the bountiful harvest.
The innovation and ideas of celebrating the event might differ from one community to another but the main cause of the event which is the yam doesn't differ. The new yam festival is a very captivating event filed with so many enticing side attractions like;Folk dances, masquerade, parades etc.
